Landscape as Memory
My painting exists in the space between the experience of nature and inner perception. Emerging from direct encounters with the landscape, the works gradually detach themselves from representation during the painting process and develop their own pictorial reality. They are not depictions of specific places, but condensations of light, atmosphere, and memory.
Within layered fields of color, transparent strata overlap, recede, and re-emerge. Rather than defining space, they open it. The resulting compositions do not direct the viewer’s gaze but invite contemplation. The image reveals itself gradually—much like a landscape that unfolds only through movement and attentive observation.
My work is rooted in the tradition of Lyrical Abstraction while extending it into a contemporary context. Spontaneity and painterly openness are combined with subtle evocations of nature. Horizons, water surfaces, reeds, and light appear not as motifs, but as associations that awaken personal images and memories within the viewer.
A defining characteristic of the work is the balance between compositional clarity and painterly freedom. The paintings derive their presence from nuanced transitions, transparency, and a sensitive interplay of color, light, and space. Their stillness is never static, but animated by an underlying sense of movement.
I regard painting as an open process and a space for perception. My works offer no fixed answers; instead, they create possibilities for experience. In an age of constant visual overstimulation, they advocate slowness, attentiveness, and contemplation. Their strength lies in what remains unspoken—in a poetic openness that invites viewers to project their own memories and sensations into the image.
In this way, an independent visual language emerges in which nature is not represented, but experienced as atmosphere, light, and resonance.
